Roof Extension
Notting Hill

A former stables in Notting Hill – sandwiched between Victorian terraces and set among historic Mansard roofs – is getting a makeover.

A modest roof extension clad in natural Welsh slate provides one additional bedroom for the owner’s family.

A re-landscaped roof terrace offers space for relaxation and people watching in the Colville Conservation Area, with evergreen planting and a wild herb garden providing privacy and habitats for insects and birds.

Cleverly designed to recede into its surroundings, the sympathetic addition references the historic vernacular of the area – the mansard roof – while a glazed slot provides views through to the Mews beyond, a nod to the cherished ‘gap’ that helped to define the end of the mid-19C Victorian city block.

The design references pre-existing materials and forms from the area while remaining contemporary in its detailing and construction.
